Interspersed with the current rescue efforts are a series of flashbacks showing how Jack joined the fire department, his first meeting (at a supermarket) with the woman who would eventually become his wife ( Jacinda Barrett), his relationship with his children, and the bonds he formed and the trials and tribulations he endured with his fellow firefighters.Īfter graduating from the fire academy, Jack is sent to work on Baltimore City Fire Department (BCFD) Engine Company 33, in the busiest firehouse in the city. The film follows the efforts of the other men in his unit, Ladder Company 49, led by the commands of Deputy Chief Mike Kennedy ( John Travolta), Jack's mentor, to rescue him while Morrison tries to reach a safe area of the burning structure. However, the grain stored in the warehouse explodes, causing Jack to fall through several floors and breaks his leg. On a lighter note, my 8 year old daughter had some interesting observations: "When the guy fell through the roof, why wasn't he wearing his "air-thingy", and shouldn't he have jumped away when he felt the roof giving?"."When you go into burning buildings, aren't you supposed to stay with your buddy?"."How long was that duck in his locker, do you think it pooped on his stuff?"Īeat flick.I laughed, I cried, I'll see it again.Baltimore City firefighter Jack Morrison ( Joaquin Phoenix) saves a man's life in a massive four-alarm fire in a 20-story concrete grain elevator/warehouse in the Canton waterfront neighborhood of Baltimore, Maryland.

2)It is a movie about Firefighters, FOR Firefighters. The local movie critic didn't review the movie very favorable, comparing it to Backdraft.I whole-heartedly agree with the thread.1)these people really don't know what we do. So.all-in-all it was okay for a matinee, but I guess I'll have to wait another 10-15 years for Hollywood to try again.įirst, I'll get this out of the way.I cried like a little biatch. My wife suggested I go see the movie with "the boys".I knew from all the preview media that this was a movie I should take my family to see.My thoughts were that they would better understand what it is that I do when I'm not at home.Oh, Brother, was I wrong. The biggest lumps in my throat came when they showed how his wife was scared and how his son didn't want him to get hurt. Those scenes really opened my eyes to what our families go through. Even just muffled communications through the SCBA masks would have given it a "better sound" IMO. I realize some concessions have to be made to make it sellable, but Hollywood can do better than this. I'm still waiting for the great firefighting movie. The give-up attitude of the victim and rescue crews at the end.hell, they encountered god, they just cut threw lord knows how much rebar in a collapsed concrete structure with huge fire involvement and now they're going to leave. I love the old Emergency shows and they lack realism. It didn't seem anymore realistic than Backdraft IMO.not that this is essential. It hardly developed any of the characters. The huge industrial fire was Backdraft-ish.
